Fostering a homeless dog or cat is one of the most important things you can do to help save an animals life. With our shelters and rescues at capacity our homeless pets have no chance at a finding a home without the help of foster families. A foster family gives that time and attention that a shelter pet needs in order to learn basic manners and boundaries that help assimilate them into a permanent forever home.e the number of unwanted pets across San Antonio. What is meant by "fostering" a pet?

Fosters parents agree to take a dog, or cat, into their homes and care for them as if they were their own, until they can be adopted. Some of the duties of fostering a dog include feeding, walking, teaching basic commands such as sit, heel and come. We hope the foster family will provide plenty of love and patience so that your foster pet can learn to be more social in normal family environments. As foster parents, your feedback and observations concerning the dogs temperament and needs will help us place the dog in a suitable home.

How does fostering help the animals?

Fostering provides security, socialization and training. Through interaction with their foster parents the animal gains confidence and skills needed to be a responsible member of a family. Most strays have only 3 to 5 days to find a foster home once they have arrived at the shelter. It is a very stressful and confusing time for the homeless pets. Fostering allows them time to understand what is required to be a part of a home environment.

Fostering is great way for people to see if a particular breed or size fits with their lifestyle. This allows you the time necessary to determine if the dog or cat has the temperament and energy level that matches your family. It is also a way for people to help out and save a life without having to make a long- term commitment. Every foster home saves a life and the rewards are two fold, human and animal.
